As a child, there has always been an awareness of the Lord, Having grown up Catholic and attended 8 years of Catholic school I graduated high school and didn’t know Jesus.
God was a being somewhere up there Who would give you a piece of candy if you said enough prayers. After I started college, it was cooler to be an agnostic so I tried that for a while. I also tried Transcendental Meditation and a few other things.
Then after the kids were born I thought we should go to church.
I finally got to the point with church that I told God “If this is all there is to you, I don’t want it”. It was 10 years before I set foot in church after that. A girl I was dating had a brother that was in a coma after a car accident. Her family invited me to church because the preacher wanted to pray for the family.
I went and they sat on the last row for me. When the preacher called the family up for prayer, they insisted that I come with them. I told them that I was not a part of their family but again they insisted so I went. I knelt there not paying attention to what was being said and I felt heat coming over me and tears coming to my eyes. So I listened to the man and they were ordinary words … Holy Spirit give them peace and comfort…
So I waited to see if it continued… and it did! I went back to my seat and sat on the edge of it and my jaw hit the floor! I told God, "if this is You I’m going to find out more about it. You have an empty slate write on it what ever you want and use whoever you want to teach me, but I’m not going to believe anything unless you confirm it.”
The Lords and I have been faithful to honor that statement for over 40 years now… This is how I live.
